Like clockwork, SXSW is happening. The spring break for geeks is where 20,000 bands play crappy sets in a backroom of a taco restaurant in front of 22-year interns in faux-vintage plaid shirts. At that point, the bands would have played their 4th show in a day. Yeah, I can't be bothered with that. Specifically, most of the bands I would want to see are playing in town the days before or after the conference. Or, I would have seen them already at CMJ. They'll get a proper setting and be fully rested.
Here's a little cheat sheet of who's playing where in NYC.
Summer Camp -- Are you ready for the summer? Liz and Jeremy will bring their slide show of vintage family photos to Mercury Lounge this Wednesday with local boys High Highs opening. After that, the other coast will see the good times on March 10th at L.A.'s The Echo with Kisses.
Anna Calvi-- The songstress arrives next week. Hopefully, she'll be at 100%. She had to cancel a load of U.K. dates due to injury. So far, the three New York dates are still a go. Joe's Pub on March 8, Mercury Lounge on March 9 and Glasslands on March 10. My pals She Keeps Bees are the openers for Glasslands.
Bombay Bicycle Club -- All three BBC shows are sold out -- one at Knitting, two at Mercury. Their UK pals, Jonquil will open all three gigs.
Frankie & The Heartstrings-- You two times to see your new favorite band. For the Saturday night party people, you have Glasslands on March 19. Then, there's the early show at Mercury Lounge on March 21. The pop masters Veronica Falls will open the Mercury show.
Still Corners-- The shoe-gazing London outfit will pass through these parts again with a March 12 show at Glasslands. Then after SXSW, there'll open up for Papercuts at Mercury on March 26th.
Jamie Woon-- The other dubstep one-to-watch that's not named James Blake will trek over to lay down some beats. You have March 22 at Glasslands and March 24 at Le Poisson Rouge.
James Blake-- Speaking of Blake, his March 14 show at Music Hall of Williamsburg is sold out. No mind, that's the same night as Bombay Bicycle Club.
Brother-- As previously mentioned, Brother have a trio of dates for you to see if they are the real deal. March 23 at Mercury Lounge, the 24th at Rock Shop and the 25th at Maxwell's.
Wu Lyf-- Saving the best for last. The Wu Lyf Clan will make their first trip to the NYC with an April 1st show at Glasslands. That's the name night at The Strokes at MSG. I am so over The Strokes it's not even worth mentioning.
